Tricycle Battery 48V Lead Acid Replacement

Time:2026-07-08 Views:196

Replacing a 48V lead-acid battery is one of the most common maintenance tasks for standard electric tricycles used for daily commuting, light cargo hauling, and short-distance travel. The 48V lead-acid battery pack, typically composed of four 12V lead-acid batteries connected in series, serves as the core power source for low-power tricycle models with motor power ranging from 500W to 800W. Over time, these batteries gradually lose capacity due to repeated charging cycles, aging electrodes, and electrolyte evaporation, leading to issues such as shortened driving range, slow acceleration, and difficulty starting. When the tricycle can only maintain less than 60% of its original mileage or requires frequent charging within a single day, it indicates that the 48V lead-acid battery has reached the end of its service life and needs timely replacement to ensure normal vehicle operation.

Before starting the replacement process, thorough preparation and parameter verification are essential to avoid compatibility failures and safety risks. First, confirm the original battery specifications, including capacity (common 12Ah, 20Ah, 32Ah) and physical dimensions, as mismatched size will prevent installation in the battery compartment. It is critical to select a sealed lead-acid battery consistent with the original 48V system voltage, since higher or lower voltage will damage the tricycles controller, motor, and charger. Additionally, prepare basic safety tools such as insulated gloves and a screwdriver, and power off the tricycle completely before operation to prevent short circuits and electric shocks. Users should also check the condition of the original wiring harness and terminals; replace aging or oxidized wires to avoid poor contact after battery replacement.

The formal replacement steps are standardized and suitable for novice operators. First, open the tricycles battery compartment cover, disconnect the negative power cord first, followed by the positive cord, to eliminate residual current in the circuit. Then remove the fixing bolts of the old battery pack, take out the aging batteries, and clean the internal dust and dirt of the battery compartment to ensure a dry and tidy installation environment. Place the new 48V lead-acid battery pack stably in the compartment, fix it with bolts tightly to prevent vibration displacement during driving, which may cause internal battery damage. Connect the positive and negative wires in the correct order, and ensure all terminals are fastened firmly without looseness.

Post-installation debugging and daily maintenance determine the service life of the new battery. After installation, use a multimeter to test the no-load voltage of the battery pack, which should be maintained at about 53.2V for a fully charged 48V lead-acid battery. Test the tricycles startup, acceleration, and braking power cut-off functions to verify normal circuit operation. For the first charge after replacement, use a matched 48V dedicated lead-acid charger and charge continuously for 8 to 10 hours to activate the battery activity. In daily use, avoid over-discharging and over-charging, and regularly check the battery fixation and terminal tightness. Proper replacement and maintenance can extend the service life of the 48V lead-acid battery to 2 to 3 years, ensuring stable and reliable power output for daily tricycle use.
