Upgrading Citycoco’s original lead-acid battery to a lithium battery is one of the most common and practical modification schemes for electric scooter users, bringing comprehensive improvements in performance, portability, and service life, while also having certain limitations in cost and safety thresholds. Traditional lead-acid batteries are factory-standard for most entry-level Citycoco models due to their low cost and mature technology, but their inherent performance defects cannot meet the needs of long-distance riding and high-intensity use. Replacing with lithium batteries has become the mainstream upgrade choice for pursuing better riding experience.
The advantages of lithium battery replacement are prominent in multiple dimensions. Firstly, lithium batteries are lightweight, only one-third of the weight of lead-acid batteries of the same capacity, which reduces the overall vehicle load, improves flexibility, and effectively extends the cruising range. Secondly, lithium batteries support high-current discharge, with stable voltage output, no obvious power attenuation during acceleration and uphill climbing, and better power performance. In addition, lithium batteries have a long cycle life, supporting 800 to 1200 charge-discharge cycles, while lead-acid batteries only have 300 to 500 cycles. Moreover, lithium batteries have low self-discharge rate, no memory effect, and can be charged and used at any time without capacity loss.
The disadvantages and risks of replacement cannot be ignored either. The biggest drawback is the high cost: a genuine high-capacity lithium battery pack is 2 to 3 times more expensive than a lead-acid battery, increasing the modification cost significantly. Secondly, lithium batteries have higher safety requirements; inferior lithium batteries are prone to overheating, short circuit and even fire risks during high-load discharge and charging. In addition, lithium battery packs need matching BMS protection boards. Mismatched parameters will cause charging failure, cell imbalance and shortened service life. Meanwhile, some modified lithium batteries may not conform to local vehicle management regulations, bringing potential hidden dangers for road inspection and after-sales warranty.
