The 72V 150Ah LiFePO4 battery is a high-capacity power source widely adopted for heavy-duty cargo electric tricycles. Featuring large capacity, long cycle life and favorable low-temperature performance, it is commonly used on farm transport and urban-rural freight tricycles. Installation directly determines the vehicle’s electrical safety and battery service life. Operators must follow standardized procedures, including pre-installation inspection, compartment preparation, positioning and securing, wiring connection and power-on testing, to avoid hazards such as poor contact, short circuits and vibration abrasion.
Pre-installation inspection is the first priority. Cut off the main power supply and verify that the vehicle controller and wiring harness can withstand the 72V system. Check the battery’s outer dimensions, weight and terminal positions to confirm the original battery compartment has sufficient internal space. The 72V 150Ah LiFePO4 battery is heavy and requires two people for handling to prevent shell deformation and collision damage. Clean the compartment thoroughly, removing residual acid, dust and metal debris. Metal fragments must be cleared completely, otherwise they may trigger short circuits during bumpy rides. Inspect the cross-section of the main power and charging cables; insufficient wire gauge will lead to overheating under high-current loads. Replace cables with high-temperature silicone wires if needed. Also confirm that the BMS parameters match the vehicle’s maximum discharge current to ensure protection functions activate normally.
When removing the old battery, mark the positive and negative cables clearly with tags to avoid polarity mix-up. Loosen terminals sequentially and take out the old battery. Clean corrosion on terminal posts and inspect the compartment for cracks, deformation and sharp edges. Wrap sharp corners with EVA flame-retardant foam to prevent cutting the battery casing and wiring. Lay flame-retardant cushion foam on the bottom and sides of the battery compartment for vibration damping, reducing impact on the battery when the vehicle passes rough roads and preventing loose wiring inside the cell module caused by continuous vibration.
Positioning and securing the battery is a core installation step. Place the 72V 150Ah battery steadily into the compartment, leaving small gaps for heat dissipation. Fasten the battery with matching pressure bars and bolts; apply moderate torque and avoid excessive clamping force that deforms the casing. Fill gaps around the battery with flame-retardant foam to restrict horizontal and vertical movement. After fastening, shake the frame gently to check for battery shifting. If the battery moves inside the compartment, continuous vibration loosens terminals and wears cable insulation, which may cause thermal failures. Keep the terminal area of the battery casing clean and free of debris.
For wiring, strictly follow polarity marks: red wire connects to positive terminal and black wire to negative terminal. Connect the battery side first, then the vehicle controller side. Wipe terminal surfaces to ensure tight contact and evenly tighten bolts to eliminate loose connections. Poor contact creates resistance and heats rapidly under heavy high-current loads, which is one of the leading fire risks. After wiring, cover exposed terminals with insulating sleeves and high-temperature tape to prevent leakage and short circuits caused by moisture and dust. Route the charging circuit separately with matched high-power connectors. Keep charging cables away from sharp frame edges and moving components, and secure harnesses with cable clips to prevent pulling and abrasion. Leave reasonable slack on all wires; do not stretch them tight.
Once wiring is finished, perform a pre-power-on recheck. Verify all polarities again and inspect insulation for damage or exposed conductors. Close the main switch and power on gradually. Observe the BMS indicator lights and read cell voltages and total pack voltage to confirm no fault alarms. Test vehicle lights and instrument readings under no-load conditions to ensure stable voltage without fluctuation. Then carry out a short test drive at low speed, monitoring battery temperature and voltage. If overheating, abnormal noise or sudden voltage drop occurs, cut power immediately for troubleshooting.
Several long-term protection rules apply after installation. The battery compartment needs basic waterproofing but must not be fully sealed; heat dissipation paths must be retained. Regularly check bolt tightness and cable insulation. For vehicles operated on rough freight roads, inspect terminals every two weeks. Never remove the battery housing or modify BMS wiring, and do not use unmatched chargers. The matched charger must be specially designed for 72V LiFePO4 batteries. Lead-acid chargers use mismatched voltage profiles and may overcharge and damage the battery.
Proper installation unlocks the full endurance and safety performance of the 72V 150Ah LiFePO4 battery. Thorough compartment cleaning, shock-absorbing mounting, reliable wiring and power testing reduce risks of vibration, overheating and short circuits, extend module life and support stable long-term operation of freight electric tricycles.
