Golf cart batteries and car batteries are both core power storage components for electric vehicles, but they differ fundamentally in design principles, performance positioning, and application scenarios, making them completely non-interchangeable in practical use. The most essential distinction lies in their working modes: car batteries belong to SLI (Starting, Lighting, Ignition) starter batteries, while golf cart batteries are professional deep-cycle batteries. Car batteries are designed to provide instantaneous high-current bursts, releasing 250A to 800A of current in a few seconds to start the internal combustion engine, with no need for long-term continuous power output. In contrast, golf cart batteries need to deliver stable, low-current continuous power for several hours to drive the electric motor, supporting long-distance and long-time operation of golf carts.

Structural design and cycle durability further widen the gap between the two battery types. Car starter batteries adopt thin electrode plate designs to maximize instantaneous current output, but they are extremely sensitive to deep discharge. Frequent deep discharge will cause rapid sulfation of the plates, leading to permanent capacity attenuation and scrapping. Golf cart deep-cycle batteries, whether lead-acid or lithium LiFePO4 types, use thickened electrode plates and reinforced internal structures, which can withstand repeated deep discharge of 50% to 80% depth of discharge. Standard car batteries only support 300 to 500 charge-discharge cycles, while ordinary golf cart lead-acid batteries achieve 800+ cycles, and lithium golf cart batteries can reach 5000+ cycles, showing far stronger fatigue resistance.

There are also obvious differences in voltage configuration, maintenance requirements, and service life positioning. Most car batteries adopt a single 12V integrated design, focusing on instantaneous starting performance and short-term power supply for vehicle electrical equipment. Golf cart battery systems mostly use 36V, 48V, or 72V combined battery packs to meet the high energy consumption of long-term operation. In terms of maintenance, traditional car batteries require regular inspection of electrolyte levels, while lithium golf cart batteries are maintenance-free. In addition, the total service life of car batteries is generally 3 to 5 years, while high-quality golf cart lithium batteries can work stably for more than 10 years. Mixing the two batteries will lead to insufficient power, rapid aging, and even safety hazards, so users must select batteries strictly according to vehicle design requirements.
