Golf Cart Battery Bulging Fix

Time:2026-07-07 Views:39

Fixing a bulging golf cart battery requires standardized, step-by-step operations based on the severity of the bulge, as improper handling will worsen battery damage or cause safety hazards. Battery bulging is divided into mild, moderate, and severe levels, and each level corresponds to different repair and solution plans. Mild bulging refers to slight outer casing expansion with no cracks, no electrolyte leakage, and normal battery voltage output. Moderate bulging involves obvious casing deformation, slight internal gas retention, and slightly unstable voltage during use. Severe bulging includes obvious casing bulging, cracks, electrolyte leakage, and significant capacity attenuation, which is extremely dangerous for continued use. Before any repair work, users must turn off the golf cart power supply, disconnect the positive and negative battery cables in order, and wear insulating gloves and goggles to avoid electric shock and acid contact injuries.

For mildly bulging golf cart batteries, targeted maintenance and adjustment can effectively repair and restore most of their service performance. First, move the battery to a cool, dry, and ventilated environment to stop all charging operations and let the static battery stand for 24 to 48 hours. This standing period allows the internal accumulated hydrogen and oxygen gas to slowly dissipate through the batterys tiny safety vents, gradually reducing internal pressure and restoring the slightly deformed casing to a flat state. After static deflation, use a professional battery tester to detect battery voltage, capacity, and internal resistance data. If the data is within the normal range, clean the battery terminals, tighten the cable connections, and perform a standardized full charge and cycle discharge to activate the internal chemical structure. After three complete charge-discharge cycles, the battery can basically return to normal working condition.

Moderately bulging batteries need professional auxiliary maintenance and partial performance restoration. After static deflation, if the casing still cannot recover and the battery capacity is reduced by 10% to 20%, users need to add a small amount of distilled water according to the batterys standard liquid level requirements to replenish the water lost due to overcharging electrolysis. It is strictly forbidden to add tap water or new sulfuric acid electrolyte, which will destroy the internal acid-base balance and cause permanent battery damage. After replenishing distilled water, use a low-current slow charging mode to charge the battery for 8 to 10 hours, avoiding high-current fast charging that will generate more gas. After charging, test the battery capacity again and match it with a qualified automatic charger to prevent secondary overcharging damage.

Severely bulging batteries have no repair value and must be replaced immediately. Severe bulging is accompanied by internal plate bending, separator damage, and irreversible chemical failure, and forced use will lead to battery short circuit, spontaneous combustion, or acid leakage. When replacing, users need to select deep-cycle lead-acid batteries matching the original model and parameters, ensure consistent specifications of each battery in the pack, and avoid mixing old and new batteries. After replacement, standardize daily charging habits, regularly inspect charger performance, and avoid long-term high-load operation of the golf cart to fundamentally solve battery bulging problems.
