BMS (Battery Management System) is the core protection component of Citycoco battery packs, responsible for overcharge, over-discharge, over-current, short circuit and temperature protection. The matching BMS rating directly determines the safety and stability of the battery when driving a 1500W high-power motor. Mismatched BMS current ratings will cause frequent protection shutdown, insufficient motor power, or even battery burnout and safety accidents. It is necessary to select a targeted BMS rating according to the 1500W motor power parameter.
First, calculate the basic working current of the 1500W motor to determine the minimum BMS rating. Taking the mainstream 60V battery specification matched with 1500W Citycoco as an example, according to the power formula I=P/U, the rated working current of the motor is about 25A. However, the instantaneous starting current and uphill high-load current of the motor will reach 5 to 2 times the rated current, that is, the instantaneous peak current is 35A to 50A. Therefore, the BMS cannot be selected according to the rated working current, and a certain current margin must be reserved to avoid over-current protection during motor acceleration and climbing.
For a 60V 1500W Citycoco motor, the most matching conventional BMS rating is 40A continuous current with 80A instantaneous peak current. The 40A continuous current can stably bear the long-term high-load working current of the motor, ensuring no power limit and no protection shutdown during normal riding, heavy-load riding and long-distance uphill riding. The 80A instantaneous peak current can perfectly adapt to the instantaneous high current generated by motor starting and rapid acceleration, avoiding sudden power failure that affects riding safety. For users who often carry heavy loads and pursue violent acceleration, it is recommended to upgrade to a 50A continuous BMS to further improve stability.
If it is a 72V 1500W high-voltage configuration, the current is relatively lower, and a 30A continuous BMS with 60A peak current can meet the demand. It is crucial to avoid overrating and underrating selection. If the BMS current is too small (such as 20A/30A), over-current protection will be triggered frequently during motor operation, resulting in intermittent power failure and inability to exert 1500W power performance. If the BMS current is too large (above 60A), it will lose effective over-current protection, fail to cut off the power in time when the circuit is short-circuited or overloaded, and easily cause battery heating, bulge and even fire hazards.
In addition to current rating, the BMS of 1500W models also needs to support temperature protection, cell equalization and overcharge/over-discharge protection functions. High-power motors generate more heat during operation, and the BMS with temperature protection can automatically cut off the power when the battery temperature is too high, effectively avoiding thermal runaway risks. It is recommended to select a dedicated high-power BMS for Citycoco 1500W models to ensure perfect matching of battery, motor and controller, and maximize service life and riding safety.
