Citycoco battery charging time depends on three key factors: battery capacity (Ah), charger output current (A), and battery chemistry (lithium-ion vs. lead-acid). Standard Citycoco models use 60V batteries with capacities ranging from 12Ah to 30Ah, paired with chargers that deliver 2A, 3A, or 5A of current. Lithium-ion batteries, the most common type, charge faster than lead-acid batteries due to their higher charge acceptance. A 60V 20Ah lithium battery with a standard 2A charger takes 8–10 hours to fully charge from 0% to 100%. Using a faster 3A charger reduces this time to 6–7 hours, while a 5A fast charger can charge the same battery in just 3–4 hours.
Lead-acid batteries, though less common now, have longer charging times due to their chemical properties. A 60V 20Ah lead-acid battery with a 2A charger takes 10–12 hours to fully charge, and even with a 3A charger, it still requires 8–9 hours. This is because lead-acid batteries need a longer absorption phase to ensure full charging without damaging the cells. Fast charging is not recommended for lead-acid batteries, as it can cause overheating, sulfation, and shortened lifespan. Most Citycoco manufacturers advise against using fast chargers with lead-acid batteries to maintain warranty coverage and battery health.
Charging time is also affected by the battery’s state of charge (SoC) when plugged in. Charging from 0% to 100% takes the longest, but topping up from 50% to 100% cuts the time roughly in half. For example, a 60V 20Ah lithium battery charged from 50% with a 2A charger takes only 4–5 hours, making it convenient for quick top-ups during the day. Additionally, ambient temperature impacts charging speed: charging in cold temperatures (below 10°C) slows the chemical reaction, adding 1–2 hours to the total time, while charging in hot temperatures (above 35°C) can trigger the BMS to reduce charging current to prevent overheating, also extending charging time.
Most Citycoco chargers use a CC-CV (Constant Current-Constant Voltage) charging algorithm, which optimizes charging time and battery health. The charger first delivers a constant current until the battery reaches its full charge voltage (67.2V for 60V lithium batteries), then switches to constant voltage to top up the remaining capacity gently. This prevents overcharging and ensures the battery reaches 100% capacity without damage. Many modern Citycoco batteries and chargers also feature LED indicators to show charging progress: a red light means charging is in progress, while a green light indicates a full charge. For daily use, a 2A charger is sufficient for overnight charging, while a 5A fast charger is ideal for users who need quick recharges between rides, though it should be used sparingly to preserve battery lifespan.
